1.05 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental: Set and grout pavers when ambient temperature in area is at least 50ºF and rising. Maintain ambient temperature for minimum 2 days prior to installation and 7 days after completion unless higher temperatures are required by referenced standards or material manufacturer’s instructions. Provide all precautionary measures necessary to ensure that excessive temperature changes do not occur.
2. Provide sufficient ventilation to allow installations to properly set.
3. Maintain adequate lighting levels in all installation areas.

B. Protective Penetrating Sealer: FBC recommends, prior to grouting, a protective penetrating sealer coat be applied to exposed tile surfaces to prevent adherence of grouting residue on exposed surfaces, and to protect from staining during construction period. If sealer is applied, provide protective measures to ensure sealer does not get onto bonding surfaces (back and edges) of tile. Inspect each tile prior to setting, and remove all traces of sealer from back and edges to ensure proper bond.

1. Surfaces are firm, dry, clean, and free of dust and oily or waxy films.
2. Grounds, anchors, plugs, recess frames, waterproof membrane, electrical and mechanical work in brick paver locations have been installed prior to start of paver work.
D. Do not proceed with work until defects or conditions adversely affecting quality and execution brick paver work are corrected.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Lay0ut: Prepare layout of brick paver work so as to align joints of floor, base, and trim when pieces are of same size. Lay out SO as to center paver fields in both directions in each space or area, to minimize paver cutting, and provide joints of uniform widths. Provide lay out so as to minimize use of pavers that are less than one-half paver in size.
1. Locate expansion joints and other joint types to be sealant filled during installation of setting material. Do not saw cut joints after pavers have been installed.
2. Locate joints in paver surfaces directly over joints that occur in concrete or other substrate material.

B. Protective Penetrating Sealer: Protect exposed surfaces of paver against adherence of mortar and grout by applying a coating of specified discoloring clear resin penetrating type sealer at the Project site. Provide care so as not to get any sealer on back and edges of pavers.

B. TCA Guidelines- Provide installations that comply with TCA “Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation” for methods and materials required by Project.
C. When waterproofing is required by Project conditions, do not install pavers until waterproofing material has cured and has been tested for watertightness.
D. Do not use pavers with chips, discoloration, voids or other defects that will be visible in finished work.
E. Locate expansion and other joints as specified above under Preparation, and at spacings and locations recommended in TCA Handbook
F. Install pavers in grid pattern unless otherwise indicated. Install pavers to comply with layout requirements specified in Preparation above.
G. Set and grout pavers in compliance with specified reference standards using specified materials. Install pavers to comply with the following TCA Installation Method(s):
1. TCA Method: ( ……………)

H. Install trim at conditions and locations indicated.
1. Fill all expansion joints and other penetrations with specified sealants.

3.04 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Upon completion of grouting, clean all paver surfaces to ensure they are free of all foreign matter.
1. Remove haze (residue) on pavers resulting from latex-portland cement grouting as soon as possible.

B. Do not clean pavers with acid solutions or chemical cleaners unless in accordance with both paver and grout manufacturer’s written recommendations.
1. Flush with clean water before and after cleaning.

C. Leave installations finished, clean, and free of chipped, broken, cracked, loose or other defective paver work.
D. Apply a surface coating of thin brick paver manufacturer’s recommended cleaner to enhance natural color of paver to achieve a high sheen or glossy appearance on the surface, apply paver manufacturer’s recommended top coat sealer with heavy acrylic solid or wax.
E. Apply a protective coat of manufacturer’s recommended neutral protective cleaner to completed paver work.
F. Protect exterior paver installations by applying a second coating of paver manufacturer’s recommended penetrating sealer, after grout his cured.
1. Refer to FBC published maintenance guide for Sunshine Pavers installation for additional details.

***OMIT ABOVE IF NO EXTERIOR INSTALLATIONS ON PROJECT. OMIT BELOW IF SECOND COAT IS NOT DESIRED FOR INTERIOR PAVERS.

G. Protect interior paver instillations by applying a second coating of paver manufacturer’s recommended penetrating sealer, after grout has cured.
H. Protect final paver installation in a manner, and so as to maintain conditions, to ensure paver work will not deteriorate or be damaged at time of Substantial Completion.
I. Cover entire paver floor area with a heavy-duty non-staining construction paper and tape in place.
J. Prohibit foot and wheeled traffic from newly paved area for a minimum of 7 days after grouting is completed.
K. Just prior to final acceptance, remove protective paper and rinse neutral cleaner from surfaces of pavers. Dry and lightly buff.
L. Refer to FBC published maintenance guide for Sunshine Pavers installation for additional details.
